Encryption
Process notes are your private property.
Your Private Process Notes are end-to-end encrypted in your browser — we never hold the keys, can't read them, and can't hand them to a subpoena. They live separate from your Official Chart Notes, which stay minimal and legal. The only practice-management platform we know of that does this.

Frequently asked questions
Is ShrinkNotes really end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Your Private Process Notes are encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before they ever reach our servers, using a key derived from your password via PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations. The key never leaves your device, so ShrinkNotes cannot read those notes.
Can ShrinkNotes read my therapy notes?
No. Because Private Process Notes are encrypted client-side, ShrinkNotes has no way to read them — and cannot hand them over in response to a subpoena. Your Official Chart Notes are stored separately and kept deliberately minimal to meet legal requirements and nothing more.
Is ShrinkNotes a good fit for cash-pay (private-pay) therapists?
Yes. ShrinkNotes is cash-pay by default. There are no DSM/ICD pickers, session-limit counters, or compliance dashboards unless you choose to turn insurance features on.
Can I still use insurance with ShrinkNotes?
Yes — insurance is opt-in. When you need it, you can generate insurance-ready superbills for client reimbursement, log CPT and ICD codes, and keep structured treatment plans.
What happens if I forget my password?
When you set up encryption, ShrinkNotes gives you a one-time recovery key. If you forget your password, that recovery key restores access to your encrypted notes — without ShrinkNotes ever being able to read them. Store it somewhere safe, because it is the only backup to your password.
Does ShrinkNotes support telehealth sessions?
Yes. Telehealth appointments are supported, and ShrinkNotes automatically applies the -95 telehealth modifier for billing so your codes stay correct.
Can I use ShrinkNotes for coaching or other non-clinical work?
Yes. ShrinkNotes supports therapy, life coaching, and spiritual direction, and it keeps non-therapeutic sessions cleanly separate from clinical features like CPT codes, treatment plans, and superbills.
